TRAGEDY: Commercial Vehicle Crushes 15 Jogging Children To Death In Plateau State

It was a pathetic sight to behold in Barkin-Ladi area of Plateau State yesterday[Aug 03] when fifteen children, aged between 12 and 16 years, were all crushed to death in Barkin-Ladi, by a commercial vehicle conveying maize to a nearby market.
Nine others were injured and have been hospitalized.

The children who were said to be members of the Boys and Girls Brigade of about three churches in the local government headquarters were on an early morning keep-fit exercise when the incident occurred.

It was gathered that the youths from three churches usually gather for the exercise by jogging to and from nearby villages.

A vehicle carrying maize from Bokkos lost control and ran into the children numbering about 40 killing the 15 instantly.

It was gathered that immediately the incident happened, both the driver and the owner of the maize the vehicle was conveying from Bokkos to Bukuru market in Jos South Local Government Area jumped out of the vehicle and ran away to avoid being lynched by sympathisers.

According to an eyewitness' account, there was commotion as parents whose children were in the team rushed to the scene to ascertain the well-being.

The bodies were laid beside the road before they were taken to the mortuary and the injured ones transferred to Plateau State Specialist Hospital for further treatment.

Police Public Relations Officer in the state, DSP, Felicia Anslem confirmed the incident.
