Ohio kidnapper! The Man Who Kidnapped 3 Girls For 11 Years, Ariel Castro Commits Suicide In Jail

The man who kept three women captive in his Cleveland home for nearly a decade has been found dead in his prison cell.

Ariel Castro, 53, was found hanging in his cell yesterday evening at the Correctional Reception Center in Orient, Ohio, authorities confirmed this morning.

Prison officials attempted to revive Castro at the scene before he was transported to hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The 53-year-old made headlines around the world when three women, who disappeared between 2002 and 2004, when they were 14, 16 and 20 years old, were discovered trapped in his home.

They managed to escape from the Cleveland house when one of the women, Amanda Berry, broke part of a door and yelled to neighbours for help.

Castro had been placed in protective custody due to the notoriety of his case, meaning he was checked every 30 minutes by prison staff.

However, he had not been placed on suicide watch, a spokesman confirmed.

Last month Castro was sentenced to life in prison without parole plus 1,000 years after pleading guilty to over 900 counts of kidnapping and rape.

Michelle Knight, 32, Amanda Berry, 27, and Gina DeJesus, 23, were all held captive by the former bus driver in his home for almost a decade.

Gina DeJesus was 14 years old when she disappeared. Amanda Berry was 16, and Michelle Knight, 21. Castro also fathered a child with Amanda Berry, who was rescued after she escaped from the house and contacted police.

Castro was arrested the same day. He was charged with multiple counts of kidnapping, rape and aggravated murder.

At his sentencing, Castro told the court that he had been "driven by sex", adding: "I'm not a violent predator… I'm not a monster, I'm a normal person.
"I'm just sick. I have an addiction, just like an alcoholic has an addiction."
